Ukraine: Support the Rights to Hold the Rainbow Spring Festival in Mykolayiv

The rights violated in this case include freedom of opinion, expression and assembly; equality and non-discrimination; the rights of human rights defenders; the right to security of the person; the rights of minorities; the right to an effective remedy for violations.

The Issue

Following legal action from the city administration, a local court in the city of Mykolayiv, Ukraine, banned the local LGBT organization LiGA from organizing their Rainbow Spring Festival, which includes indoor and outdoor events, planned for May 15-17, 2009. The staff of LiGA received phone calls threatening violence, and unidentified persons attempted to enter their office. LiGA has had to arrange twenty-four hour security for the office.

LiGA is appealing the decision and hopes to be able to hold their activities as planned.

Militia arrested a male in Saint-Petersburg who is suspected of serial murders of homosexuals. Suspect had been making the acquaintance with hays via Internet or classifieds. He had been killing them stealing their values.

Criminal investigation department detained a citizen of Ukraine on suspicion of a murder, committed in Petersburg in January 2009. Apprehended has been on the wanted list since 2004 in Ukraine.

Suspect, 27 bears a relation to two murders more. According to provisional concept, all victims were homosexuals, reports NEWSru.com.

The murderer, homophobe, is proved guilty of three crimes: two were committed in January, one – in February. In all three cases criminal was invited by his new acquaintances at home. He was knifing them many times, stealing notebooks, mobile phones, money. Three males died of injuries. .. continue reading ..
