The London Borough of Southwark (sprich: ˈsʌðək), das ist der von knapp 300000 Menschen bewohnte, unmittelbar südlich der Themse liegende Teil Londons mit County Hall, London Eye, Southwark Cathedral, Globel Theatre, Tate Modern, Oxo Tower, Old Salt Quay, Guy’s Hopital und London Brigde Station, hat einen neuen Bürgermeister.
Councillor Jeff Hook, whose full title will be The Worshipful The Mayor of Southwark, will take on the role for the 2009-10 period with his civil partner as his official consort.
Er ist nicht der erste schwule Bezirks-Bürgermeister in London. Islington und Richmond hatten auch schon einen schwulen Mann als Mayor und einer der Vertreter des Mayor of London ist ebenfalls schwul. Für Londoner Verhältnisse ist die Wahl in Southwark also kaum noch bemerkenswert.
